      "Where wilderness meets water"

      CLIFTON-FINE

-The stretch of the "Oswegatchie River" that flows from the Hamlet of "Windfall" on through to "Newton Falls", is wide, and slow flowing, which is perfect for a lazy canoe or kayak paddle.  This span of the river is also VERY  popular amongst "anglers", as the water is packed full of an Extensive variety of fresh water fish, like bass, Northern Pike, Perch, Walleye, Bullhead, Trout and more... which have been known to grow rather large in the waters here.

-If aquatic recreation isn't for you, a leisurely stroll along the"River Road"  gives you access to some spectacular, and almost surreal scenery... and also provides ample opportunity for wildlife viewing, as the Oswegatchie river bends and twists along  BOTH sides of the road in many locations along it's journey towards the hamlet of "Oswegatchie"

      Be Advised:

This is a very short canoe carry to get around the hydroelectric dam near the old Newton Falls Paper Mill.

When paddling the river through this section you will need to get out above the dam near a small parking area. The carry proceeds down Oswegatchie-Newton Falls Road (County Rt 60) for around 0.1 miles to the put up slightly downstream of the dam. Both access points are well signed and easy to spot.

Newton Falls/ Oswegatchie River Canoe Access Locations:

-From the Oswegatchie-Newton Falls Road, (County Rt 60)

"Down Stream of the Dam" in Newton Falls. This car-top access is only about a 100-foot carry down over a small embankment. From here the river heading downstream is a bit boney in areas. This access also offers an excellent access point for fly fishing.

-From the Oswegatchie-Newton Falls Road, (County Rt 60) "Upstream of the Dam" There is a short access road with a few parking spots on the right, you can access the river upstream, with no carry involved. This widening of the river makes for a nice access if you wanted to paddle around or head up stream for a bit. This access is usually used as a takeout rather than a put in.

-From River Road. This access point is around 1-mile out of the main portion of town along River Road. There is a car-top launch at a picnic area with a nice sand beach. This access point is an excellent destination for fishing as well as paddling. There is a serious widening of the river, up and down stream of this area are all up for exploring.
